Hunte

The Hunte is a 189 km long left tributary of the Weser in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is its second longest tributary after the Aller. It flows through or touches the districts of Osnabrück, Diepholz, Vechta, Oldenburg, Wesermarsch and the city of Oldenburg.

The river rises south of the Wiehengebirge on the northern slope of the Holzhauser Berg in Osnabrück, north of the village of Melle and west of the village of Hustädte. The headwaters lie between the municipalities of Melle Oldendorf and Buer. In a short valley, the Hunte crosses the Wiehengebirge between the peaks of Linner Berg (181 m) in the west and Kleiner Kellenberg (161 m) and flows into the North German plain about 10 km from its source. At Burg Wittlage on the eastern edge of Bad Essen, it crosses under the Mittelland Canal in a canal. Part of the water is fed into the canal. In a belt of peat bogs, the Hunte flows through Bohmte and the district of Hunteburg named after it and then into the Dümmer. There are then two main arms of the Dümmer, which join at Diepholz.

It then flows into the Wildeshauser Geest, where it flows eastwards past Goldenstedt. It passes through Wildeshausen and enters the floodplain forest south of Dötlingen. In the southern part of Oldenburg, south of Küstenkanal, the Hunte divides.

In the urban area of Oldenburg, the Hunte is to be permanently crossed by a total of five road bridges.
