Building of Liptovská Mara Dam and its impact
People built the Liptovská Mara dam in 1965-1975. It flooded 13 villages.
Navigable Scenery and Protected Site
Today it forms a beautiful navigable scenery with many bays on an area of 27 km². With 566 m above sea level, overlooking the Tatra Mountains. The Ratkovo peninsula has the status of a protected site and the archaeological site of Havranok is located on this peninsula.
Operation of Hydroelectric Power Plants and Water Level
I looked here at the beginning of March, when the water had not yet reached its natural level, because the operation of hydroelectric power plants requires regular water releases. But local people told me that the dam should fill up by the beginning of the season, that is, by the end of April.
Visit to Liptovská Mara
In particular, I stopped at the Liptov marina, which is the perfect beginning and end of your journey on the waters of the Liptovská Mara. So here I am on the 5th of May, the water is a little higher, a few boats are bobbing around, but still waiting for a proper darda from the mountains or from the sky.
Marina Liptov and Its Amenities
Marina Liptov is a modern resort where you will find a complete mooring with convenient access to the boats. The mooring has a dredged tub, so even when the water is low on Liptov, the boats are fine in the marina.
The area also includes a water slide, I recommend booking in advance, the fee is 20 Euro. There is also a mooring for long and short term mooring, restaurant, fitness room, outdoor workout. You can also stay in the adjacent apartments and rooms.
Directions to Liptov Marina
If you arrive with your boat, take the Exit to Besenova, then follow the signs or the navigation. The slipway is at the end of the area, where you can also comfortably turn around and take the exit.
